Driver In Deadly MacArthur Causeway Crash Pleads Guilty

MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – The driver accused of speeding more than 100 miles an hour and plowing into an SUV, killing his passenger and severely injuring the other driver, pleaded guilty in court Friday to DUI Manslaughter.

Andres Toro rear-ended his Lamborghini into an SUV on the MacArthur Causeway on April 24, 2014. Toxicology results show his blood alcohol level was .173, more than twice the legal limit.

His friend, Dr. Malcolm Lloyd, the passenger in Toro's car died on impact. The driver of the SUV, Raul Alfonzo, was seriously injured but survived.

Toro will serve four years in prison, plus one year of house arrest and 5 years probation. Toro faced between 11-16 years in jail if he had been found guilty during a trial.

During Friday's court hearing, Dr. Malcolm Lloyd's widow, Solange Lloyd made her first statement since her husband's death.

"I wanted to show you my husband on our wedding day and our son Maxwell who turned 3 on Saturday," she said. "He was my soulmate and now I'm weak, nauseous, broken and changed forever. The love of my love, adoring father to our boys Nicholas and Malcolm," she said as her voice cracked. Her emotional statement continued with, "When Nicholas was born, he said he knew God was real."

Others in the courtroom cried as she spoke, and it even appeared Toro wiped away a few tears as he listened.

Solange finally said to Toro, "I forgive you and I know this is a tragedy and I will keep you and your family in my prayers."

Toro replied, "I'm very sorry for the loss and I pray one day you will forgive me. Amen."

Roy Black, Toro's attorney, told the judge that this "is a tragedy on both sides and referred to the case as a "torturous accident" that was traumatic for Toro as well.

In addition to his four year prison sentence, the judge ruled Toro must receive treatment for alcohol while behind bars.
