MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A Miami woman is dead while her toddler daughter is recovering after police say they were both stabbed in a domestic dispute early Thursday

It happened around 1:45 a.m. at NW 2nd Street and NW 7th Avenue.

A Miami police officer shot and killed the accused stabber.

The Miami officer, whose name has not been released, was on patrol when he came across the man stabbing a woman with a knife.

"The officer was not dispatched to any call that we know of at this moment, he did ride up on the attack in progress," said Miami Police Chief Rodolfo Llanes.

When the officer intervened, the man reportedly tried to go after the cop. Javier Ortiz, the head of the Fraternal Order of Police in Miami, said the officer shot the man in self-defense.

The man died on the scene. The injured woman, identified as 46-year old Joenny Medina Feliz, was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center where she died.

Police said the Medina Feliz's two-year old daughter was also stabbed. Her 18-year old daughter, Depaula, said they had just moved into the neighborhood about five months ago.

Depaula said her mother had been dating the man who stabbed her for about eight months.

"I was sleeping and I woke up and saw him with a knife trying to cut my mother," she said.

A man who lives in the area said he woke to the sounds of a woman's screams. He said he looked out the window and saw a man with a knife facing a Miami police officer. When the man didn't, he said the officer shot him.

"He told the guy to put the knife on the floor and he didn't want to, he told him like five times, then the police (officer) shot him," said Depaula.

"The officer is a hero," said Ortiz. "The officer did everything he could to prevent more injury but unfortunately he had no other choice but to fire."

The officer, who has been with the department for 11 years, was not injured.

Family members say the toddler underwent surgery and is expected to recover.
