Track Roundup: District Meets Full Of Dominant Performances

After two weeks of district track meets in Broward and Dade County, a deep talent pool of athletes remains for this week's region meets.

The region meets are the final qualifiers for the May 6-7 Florida High School Track and Field State Championships at IMG Academy Stadium in Bradenton, where all four classifications will compete over two days instead of two weekends.
The top four finishers in each event at districts advanced into the region meets.

Here are some highlights from the various district meets held the past two weeks.

DISTRICT 16-4A
Southridge won the girls (191) title and Coral Reef (127) won the boys team title, three points ahead of Southridge. Southridge junior Symone Mason won the 200 (23.8) and 400 (55.42) with national marks. Southridge girls swept all three relays. Senior Carlin Berryhill swept the 1,600 (4:31) and 3,200 (9:48) for Coral Reef.

DISTRICT 15-4A
Our Lady of Lourdes (218) won the girls and Columbus (171.50) won the boys team titles. Lourdes junior Sabrina Quijano won the 800 (2:20), 1,600 (5:31) and 3,200 (12:33). North Miami senior Asjah Wallace won the 200 (24.86), 100 hurdles (15.27) and 300 hurdles (46.43). American freshman sensation Tyrese Cooper won the 100 (10.62), 200 (20.89) and 400 (46.68).

DISTRICT 14-4A
Flanagan won the girls (197) and Miramar (179) won the boys team titles. Flanagan swept all three girls relays. Sophomore Jamal Walton of Everglades won the 200 in 21.30 and 400 (48.32).

DISTRICT 13-4A
Defending state champion St. Thomas Aquinas swept the boys and girls team titles by more than 100 points. Junior sprinter Kristen Laidlaw won the 100 (12.51) and 200 (25.16) and was a member of the winning 400 and 800 relays. Senior distance runner Alexa Cruz won the mile (5:14.42) and two mile (10:59) and was a member of the winning 800 relay. The Raiders individual boys champions were Yohance Haynes in the 800 (1:59); Ivan Donaher, 1,600 (4:35); Darian Adriano, 3,200 (9:44.68); and Jermaine Byrd, 110 hurdles (15.17).

DISTRICT 12-4A
Douglas swept the boys (167) and girls (242) team titles. Gillian Morrison of Douglas was a triple winner in the high jump (5-8), long jump (18-0) and triple jump (39-6).

DISTRICT 16-3A
Miami Northwestern dominated the district meet with 363 points and are overwhelming favorites to win the Region 4-3A title and eighth straight 3A state championship. Belen Jesuit won the boys title with 187.50 points. Northwestern junior Twanisha Terry won the 100 (12.14) and 200 (23.97) and teammate Timetria Mitchell won the 100 hurdles (13.82) and 300 hurdles (41.92). Mater seventh grader Jinah Mickens-Malik won the 800 in 2:14. Belen sophomore Joshua Collins swept the 1,600 (4:29) and 3,200 (9:56).

DISTRICT 15-3A
Northeast won the girls team title with 204 points ahead of Dillard (196). Blanche Ely won the boys team title (227) and Boyd Anderson was second (132.50). Dillard senior Brittany Gill won the 1,600 (5:16.22) and 3,200 (11:39.92) and was second in the 800 (2:23). Northeast freshman Jan'Taijah won the 200 (24.71) and 400 (55.69). Northeast's nationally-ranked junior hurdler Damion Thomas won the 110 hurdles (14.00). Ely swept the boys 800 and 3,200 relays.

DISTRICT 16-2A
Ransom Everglades won the girls team title with 140.50 points and Miami Pace edged Miami Jackson, 120-116. Tyquan Thornton of Booker T. Washington won the 100 (10.97), 200 (22.43) and 400 (49.96) meter races. Tiara McMinn of Jackson won both 100 and 300 hurdles (15.01, 44.68) events and high jump (5-4).

DISTRICT 15-2A
Pine Crest girls won their fourth district title in five years knocking off defending state champion Hallandale by one point, 148-147, and American Heritage Plantation (140). Calvary Christian won the boys' title with 112 followed by American Heritage (95) and defending state champion Hallandale (88). Pine Crest boys were fifth (76.50). Pine Crest had five individual champions: Taylor Logue, pole vault (10-6); Nyla Lindo, high jump (5-2); Amanda Schwartz, 800, 2:24.04; and Julia Montgomery in the 1,600 (5:20.14) and 3,200 (11:28.15); and 4x800meter relay (9:56.28) with Montgomery anchoring. The Panthers, with 49 PRs and 10 season-bests, qualified 22 athletes in 25 events out of one of the fastest district meets for the region meet…American Heritage sophomore Anthony Schwartz turned in national marks in the 100 in 10.37 and 200 in 21.07.

DISTRICT 16-1A
Westminster Christian swept the boys (97) and girls (104) team titles in the four-team meet. Florida Christian junior Sydney Pereira won the 100 (12.70) and 200 (26.35). Westminster Christian swept all three girls relays. Westminster Christian senior William Ray won the 100m (11.50) and 200m (23.71).

DISTRICT 15-1A
Doctors Charter won the girls title with 179.50 points and Archbishop Curley won the boys crown with 155 points. Doctors Charter eighth grader Shammae Shackleford won the long jump (15-6.50) and 100 (13.27). Freshman Brandon Morales was Curley's only individual champion, winning the 800 in 2:15.66.

DISTRICT 14-1A
South Florida HEAT swept the team titles. The HEAT edged host Westminster Academy, 196-191, for the boys title and HEAT girls dominated with 326 points. John Zolnowski swept the hurdle events for the HEAT, 16.05 in the 110 hurdles and 39.47 in the 300 intermediate hurdles. The HEAT won all but two girls events.

Region 4-4A: April 26, Tuesday, at Jupiter, 1 p.m. prelims, 6:30 p.m. finals.

Region 4-4A: April 27, Wednesday, at Tropical Park, (Hialeah Gardens host), 10 a.m. prelims, 4:30 p.m. finals.

Region 4-3A: April 28, Thursday, at Blanche Ely, 1 p.m., prelims, 4:30 p.m., finals.

Region 4-2A: April 28, Thursday, at Calvary Christian (Pine Crest host), 10 a.m. prelims, 6 p.m. finals.

Region 4-1A: April 28, Thursday, at Dade Christian, noon, prelims, 5 p.m. finals.
