MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A wild story unfolded in Southwest Miami-Dade Wednesday night that ended with an officer shooting and killing a man.

Miami-Dade police told CBS4's Carey Codd a woman was kidnapped from a business in Homestead and placed in the trunk of a car.

The woman managed to call police and alert them to what happened.

Police said the officers traced the car to a wooded area near a retirement community at SW 355 St. and SW 180 Ave.

When police arrived the car was empty. Authorities said the man and woman were in the woods.

Investigators said a man in his 40s emerged from the woods with a firearm and that led to a deadly confrontation.

"The subject confronted one of our K9 officers, pointed a shotgun towards the officer forcing the officer to shoot him. The subject, unfortunately, was pronounced deceased on the scene," Miami-Dade police spokesperson Jennifer Capote explained.

CBS4 News was told the woman is shaken up but is okay and is talking to police.

Lots of unanswered questions remain about the relationship between man and woman. Police said he was possibly the woman's ex-boyfriend or ex-husband.

It's still a very active crime scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the police-involved shooting, which Miami-Dade police said is protocol.
