SUNRISE (CBSMiami) -- Calling a hockey game starts bright and early for Steve 'Goldie' Goldstein.

"It's 10:30 a.m. and the Panthers are on the ice, watching them skate, making sure that all the players that are supposed to be in the game are out there. That's the number one thing you do -- count guys," said Goldie, who keeps a tab on players and the team in his notebook.

When he's done with practice, the afternoon is filled with production meetings, rehearsals and one-on-one conversations with coaches and players.

But once the arena starts buzzing, the marathon turns into a sprint for Goldie and his broadcast partner and Hall-of-Famer Denis Potvin, who find themselves racing through the arena to get to their booth.

From his perch, Goldie then begins to paint a picture of the action. It's an art form all its own.

"You know, the toughest part is keeping up with the speed. There's no sport that's faster than NHL hockey. But that's the challenge of it and that's the fun part of it," said Goldstein.

It takes hours of preparation to nail the perfect call at the most unexpected moments.

"As soon as a goal is scored at home, you try to be done as quickly as you can. And just be silent and let the players celebrating and the fans celebrating tell the story," Goldie went on.

It's a long day repeating up to 82 times a season. But win or lose, there's nowhere else Steve Goldstein would rather be.

"It's what I've always wanted to do ever since I was a little kid. And somehow it's actually worked out."
