Study: Life Expectancy Differs For Miami Babies One Mile Apart

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Living just a couple of blocks apart can make a big difference for newborns in South Florida.

A new study shows babies born just one mile apart in Miami face up to a 15-year difference in life expectancy.

The study by Virginia Commonwealth University Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation notes a complex web of factors impacts the disparities that exist between the impoverished Overtown neighborhood and downtown Miami.

Those factors include access to education, jobs, affordable housing, nutritious food, places for physical activity, clean air, health care and social services.

Researchers say they hope local officials will use the data to raise awareness that improving health means more than caring for the sick.

Researchers lauded local efforts already under way, including expanded farmers' markets and community gardens and movement programs in child care centers.
