MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A drive-by shooting in northwest Miami-Dade killed one man and left another in critical condition.

Miami-Dade Police said the vehicle shot at the men as they stood outside their home Sunday afternoon. Investigators scoured for evidence from the home near one end of N.W. 27th Street to the Bravo Supermarket at the other end of the street at 30th Avenue.

Ivis Castro, 23, collapsed where he stood, officials said.

His roommate and friend, Danny Hernandez, 28, made it all the way to the corner store about 50 yards away.

"The guy came limping and he walked up toward the counter and after he reached the counter he was begging for help," said store owner Bryan Reyes. "Once he turns around he collapsed. And he pulls over his shirt and then you see the gunshot wound. That's when I went to the back to grab napkins and compress to stop the bleeding."

As investigators spoke to witnesses and processed the area for evidence, Castro's loved ones waited anxiously in tears.

His father, Alejandro Castro, told CBS4's Donna Rapado that his son moved to south Florida five years ago at the age of 18. His terminally ill mother sent him to the U.S. to keep him from a life of gangs and crime in Honduras.

The father and son team worked together in pest control. The elder Castro would pick up Ivis each day at home, then drop him off again at night.

Alejandro explained that he had just spoken to his son 30 minutes before he was killed. He was supposed to call him back with the number of jobs for Monday. Sadly, that call became something else entirely. "Imagine," Alejandro said, choking back tears.

At Jackson Memorial Hospital, Hernandez's family waited for news while Danny was in surgery. His worried brother lamented on the irony that they came to this country for a better, safer life.

Hernandez was out of surgery Sunday night, his brother said. Doctors told the family they were optimistic.

Police have not yet released a motive nor a description of the drive-by vehicle.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
