DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) -- CBS4 News is learning that a man arrested earlier this week for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl has a checkered past and just got out of jail a year ago after prosecutors dropped a murder charge against him.

Lamont Mayweather is accused of a sickening crime -- sexually assaulting a young child. Once his name popped up in the news this week after the arrest, Vernell Moss said she saw a chance to let the community know once again that the murder of her son Lataurus Randall -- on a Deerfield Beach golf course in 2011 -- remains unsolved.

"I'm asking for help to get victory for my son," Moss said. "He didn't deserve that."

BSO arrested Lamont Mayweather in 2011 for taking part in the attempted robbery and murder of Randall. Court documents show that a witness initially told police and prosecutors that he could tell Mayweather was one of the men involved based on Mayweather's voice. However, as trial neared, the witness said he was no longer 100 percent confident about that. Prosecutors wrote in a close out memo that they were forced to drop the charges against Mayweather.

"They had him and they let him go," Moss said. "I told the state attorney, he's gonna be back."

And now he is -- being held in the Broward County Jail without bond for the sex crime. Moss wants BSO to push Mayweather for answers in her son's murder.

"I want them to go back to Lamont, go back to him and ask him, who shot Lataurus?" she said. "He knows who did that."

She also believes that people in the community know who took her son's life and she wants them to have the courage to speak up.

"Please come forward," she pleaded. "Please help us. You know the truth."

BSO says Mayweather remains a suspect in the Randall homicide and that the investigation is active and open. If you know anything about the murder you are urged to call Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
