PLANTATION (CBSMiami) -- A good Samaritan is being credited with a heroic rescue after a minivan plunged into a canal in Plantation.

Plantation Fire Rescue said a 40-year-old man and his 10-year-old daughter were driving in the van when they somehow lost control and ended up in the canal near N.W. 47th Avenue and West Sunrise Boulevard.

Jephtah Thomas was on his way to work when he saw what happened and jumped into the water.

"They knocked on the back window and I realized that they were in the back," said Thomas. "So I went over there, pried it open, busted the glass open. Once I busted the glass open, I took the people out."

The father and his daughter were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and crews later towed the vehicle out of the canal.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
