LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) -- A car is riddled with bullets after a man was shot during an apparent armed robbery in Lauderhill.

"He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," said one man who did not want to reveal his identity.

The bullet holes could be seen on the driver's side door of a car parked near 5800 block of NW 23rd Street.

A man came to pick up his girlfriend when he was ambushed in the driveway just after 10 a.m.

"I was in my kitchen making breakfast and I heard the shots," said a neighbor, "Me and my cousin right here, we ducked and that was it."

Witnesses say the victim was trying to get away when he was shot.

"The white car was backing out and he was being shot upon by a young man," said that same neighbor who witnessed the shooting. "He backed out and he was being shot at and he tried to move."

The victim made it around the corner when he found a police officer who heard the shots and was heading to check it out. A man who lives in the duplex where the shooting happened, who does not want to reveal his identity, said the victim told him the gunman was a stranger with plans to pull off a quick robbery.

"He just said 'give me what you got' and he said he didn't have anything and he just shot him," said the neighbor.

That man said the victim is from out of town.

"He doesn't even live here. He lives in North Carolina. He's just visiting," the man said. "He's never been in Florida a day in his life and the first time he comes to Florida he gets shot."

For people who live here, a random robbery with gunfire in the middle of the morning is frightening.

"(I'm) scared because I have kids and they play outside," said Michelle Williams.

"We hear gunshots from afar but never that close to us," said a neighbor. "It's just surprising to know that you got good people that live in middle class (neighborhood) but still have to deal with careless people, people that can't find jobs, people who don't want to work but want to take from other people."

The gunman is still on the loose. If you have information, call Broward Crimestoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
