MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has cancelled the search for a man believed to have fallen off of a cruise ship near the Florida Keys.

Helicopters and other aircraft had been looking for Texas resident David Mossman, 46, throughout Saturday night and into the following morning.

Authorities were unable to find him after falling about 100 feet from the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas and into the water.

"We want to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mossman as the decision to suspend a search is never an easy one to make and is done with great care and deliberation," said Chris Eddy, search-and-rescue technical specialist at the Coast Guard 7th District. "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and an exhaustive search, our crews were unable to locate him."

On Saturday at approximately 3 a.m., watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Key West received a report that Mossman had gone overboard off the coast of Key Largo.

A total area of 2,583 square nautical miles were searched.
