Specialty Tag Overhaul Heads To House Floor

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - A measure that would eventually remove some of the lower-selling specialty license plates from the road is headed to the House floor.
On Thursday, the Economic Affairs Committee unanimously backed a proposal that would require an increased number of sales for tags to be available. The number of pre-ordered tags would grow from 1,000 to 4,000, a number that would also have to be maintained annually by many of the more than 120 tags already in use.
Before voting, the committee amended the proposal to give groups seeking new tags three years to reach the 4,000 figure. Also, it would prohibit the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles from issuing any new tags when more than 100 are available and exempt from the sales benchmark tags for professional sports teams and state universities.
Of the 122 specialty tags on the road in 2014, 55 sold fewer than 4,000 plates. However, many of the tags currently at the bottom of the list for annual sales are for private colleges and universities, which are exempt from the minimum sales requirements.
The Senate version of the bill has been approved by one committee and is assigned to two other panels.
