MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Friends and family of a motorcyclist who was struck in a Miami intersection and left to die are collecting money to help pay for his hospital bills.

Jonathan Borrero was stopped at a flashing red light at Beacon Boulevard and SW 7th Street around 1:40 a.m. Sunday when he was struck from behind by a blue Toyota minivan.

On impact Borrero, 21, was thrown about 100 feet.

Witnesses told police the driver of the Toyota, later identified as 50-year old Luis Sanchez, briefly stopped and then drove off. He stopped about a block away and got of the Sienna. When police arrived, Sanchez allegedly tried to run away but was caught, and after a brief struggle, was taken into custody.

During questioning at the police station, Sanchez reportedly gave a taped confession to detectives and was charged with Leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injuries and resisting arrest without violence.

Borrero's girlfriend, Dayna Richardson, watched a video of the accident released by police Wednesday and struggled to compose herself.

"I feel like really breaking down right now but I'm going to keep strong," Richardson said. "I've been crying and crying, I really don't want to cry right now, I just want to be hopeful."

Richardson is thankful for the Samaritans who stopped to aid Borrero and helped capture the suspect.

"I told them they were amazing people. It was amazing what they did," Richardson said.

Borrero was taken to Jackson Memorial Trauma Center in critical condition.

He was put into a medically induced coma.

According to the gofundme page set up for him, Borrero fractured a fibula and tibula. He also had some swelling on the brain. On Tuesday, updated information appeared on the page.

"Guys! Jonathan is doing so much better! Recent CAT Scans show that his brain is not leaking fluids anymore! We want to thank everyone for all their support. We appreciate everything guys. Thank you so much!"
