$16M Given To Florida Groups For Cancer Research

TALLAHASEE, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — A number of Florida organizations are getting money for cancer research and tobacco-related diseases.
The Florida Department of Health announced Thursday that over $16 million in research funding was awarded to 17 different projects. These funds will support researchers in their efforts to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment and develop cures for cancer and tobacco-related diseases.
The research focuses on the most common cancers such as breast, lung and prostate cancer. Other research includes the facilitation of smoking cessation, gene therapy for stroke, and lung cancer immunotherapy. One project in particular is geared toward bio-behavioral intervention for smokers living with HIV.
The money was dispersed among a number of universities and cancer research centers, including the University of Florida, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and Mayo Clinic Florida.
