GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami) -- NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal went out of his way to shoot some hoops with some kids in Gainesville -- and the officer that brought them all together.

Shaq got involved in the fun after seeing a viral video of the Gainesville cop who decided to join a group of kids playing basketball, instead of reprimanding them about a neighbor's noise complaint.

When they were done playing, Officer Bobby White, now known as the "Basketball Cop," told the kids he'd bring backup for the next game.

But Officer White had no idea the department invited the Shaq Diesel to be that back up.

At a meeting that Officer White thought would just be about rounding up the other boys in blue to join in the hoops game, they all got a "big" surprise.

The Rematch: GPD "Basketball Cop" returned as promised, and brought SHAQ as his backup! by Gainesville Police Department on YouTube

O'Neal asked the police department to keep the event low-key to be able to truly surprise the kids.
