Search Called Off For Missing Lauderdale Swimmer

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - The search has been called off for a missing swimmer off a Ft. Lauderdale beach.

The search was launched around 11:45 a.m. after police received word that an adult male had gone missing while swimming off NE 35th Street and Galt Ocean Drive.

A person in a beachside condo noticed the man struggling in the water and contacted building security

Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue dispatched a search team on a boat which was joined by three boats from the city's police department and two lifeguards on rescue boards,

Rescue divers were also sent in to search under the waves

The Broward Sheriff's Office helicopter also assisted in the search.

After searching for more than hour, it was called off without finding the swimmer or his body.

Police said there's no reason to believe the man didn't get out of the water on his own before the search boats arrived.
