North Dade Wendy's Windows Shattered

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Plywood covers three windows at a northern Miami-Dade restaurant after it was targeted by vandals.

In the overnight hours, someone shot out or smashed the windows at the Wendy's on NW 119th Street across from Miami Dade College's North Campus.

"Somebody was probably shooting," said restaurant employee Derek Booker when he showed up for work.

Employees told police the restaurant's alarm went off around 3 a.m.

Fortunately, they say, no one was inside the restaurant at the time.

"Man that's terrible. That's why they are putting windows up here," said longtime customer Willie Thomas. "Man what can I say. This world is kind of strange. You have got to watch it, of course, but I hate this happening out in my neighborhood. I eat here all the time."

Glass technician James Land who came out to measure for replacement windows told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that this type of act is more common than you may think.

"It makes no sense to me. There is no money value here. Just makes no sense. It's senseless," said Land. "We're seeing this on a regular basis. We're out running 24-hour calls fixing broken windows, people even breaking in Family Dollars. This has to be a pretty big epidemic in South Florida. People breaking stuff and destroying things and stuff. I am clueless why they do this regularly."

Land estimated that the replacement windows and clean up will cost several thousand dollars.

"Why are people doing this?" asked Land. "I would hope they would have better things to do than to ruin a business and hinder people from making an honest living."

Police have not said if anyone entered the restaurant through the broken windows or if anything was taken.

Anyone with information should call Miami-Dade Police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
