FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The precautionary boil water order for parts of Fort Lauderdale remains in effect following a water main leak that flooded Sunrise Boulevard on Christmas Day.

The boil water notice is for people who live in the following boundaries:

West: NE 17th Way

South: NE 9th Street and NE 9th Place

East: Middle River

North: NE 11th Street

People who live within these boundaries are being advised that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes be boiled.  A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient.  As an alternative, bottled water may be used.

The water main break in Fort Lauderdale has been fixed but the boil water order remains in effect until at least the end of Sunday, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The notice will remain in effect until a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.

Crews worked all night Friday and during the day on Saturday to fix the leak which started Friday when water gushed out of a crater which measured 20x20 feet on westbound Sunrise Boulevard between 19th and 20th Avenues near the Gateway Theater.

Crews finally gained control of the valves Friday night so they could pump the floodwaters and the crater.

The busted line affected several nearby mom & pop restaurants open for the Christmas crowd, which forced them to close early.
