OPA-LOCKA (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade Police are investigating a scene in Opa-locka where one person is dead two other people went to the hospital.

"We're just trying to figure out what's going on," said Rosetta Covington, the victim's aunt.

Family members have gathered near an Opa-locka apartment complex off the 1200 block of Alibaba Avenue after they said they received a call from investigators that their loved one was dead.

"There's nothing that they can tell us. They just tell us we have to stay and talk to a detective right now," said Covington.

According to Miami-Dade Police, one person died while two others were taken to the hospital around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Rosetta Covington said her nephew, Jonas Covington, is the one who died.

"He was a sweetheart. I was just with him on Thanksgiving," she said.

A number of police cars responded to the scene.

Those who live nearby said they heard several gunshots and ran for cover.

"I heard four shots and I ducked down behind my truck," said John Young who lives nearby. "I see a whole lot of police cars and then I saw the rescue."

Al Jenkins says the gunfire in nothing new.

"This is all the time you hear gunfire, so it's nothing out of the ordinary," said Jenkins. "However, when you hear it so close to home, when you're hearing it and you're watching television in your living room, you just have to come out and investigate what's going on."

Miami-Dade Police said a fourth person was detained and being questioned to see if he was involved in the incident. The condition of the two people transported is not known.
