MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The Miami Heat has stepped up to help a veterans group.

The VFW Post 5693 in Opa-locka was robbed just a few days ago. Thieves got away with more than 2,000 pounds of canned food, cereal and other dry foods.  They broke into three locked freezers, stealing hundreds of pounds of meat. The food was for the Make-A-Wish Veterans who feed veterans in need every Friday.

When word spread of the burglary, community groups and residents pitched in that they could. Friday morning the Miami Heat's Home Strong foundation for vets stopped by with food, water and other supplies to make the weekly give away possible.

"The Miami Heat is a community organization, that's how we feel about ourselves. So when we see people in our community hurting. especially veterans, we want to make sure that we'll jump in and make sure that pain was as small as possible," said Michael McCullough with the Miami Heat.

The burglary may have been a blessing in disguise for the Make-A-Wish Veterans. The Heat's Home Strong group may become a sponsor for them.

"They are talking about partnering up with us and helping our veterans because they do the same thing as we do," said Melinda Buford with the Make-A-Wish Veterans.

The Miami Heat brought $20,000 worth of food to the veterans' group. The group, however, is still not out of the woods. The need to have equipment replaced that was either stolen or destroyed in Tuesday's overnight burglary.
