COCONUT CREEK (CBSMiami) – It was a frightening scene at a Coconut Creek Preschool on Thursday morning when the driver of a car, with a 2-year-old inside, smashed into the school.

Parents said the car hit an area that is usually filled with kids but was empty as the children were eating lunch in a different area of the school.

"I was scared for the children," said Denise Araya, the aunt of one of the kids. "I'm still shaking."

Araya couldn't believe what she saw when she arrived at the Young Minds Preschool.

"This could have been tragic," Araya said. "There could have been lives lost. That room is usually filled with children."

Coconut Creek Police said the driver of the car might have suffered a medical issue that led to the crash.

Sgt. Kathy Markland said a 2-year-old who was restrained in the car suffered minor injuries and was taken to West Boca Medical Center for treatment.

Markland said the driver appeared to be doing okay a short time after the crash. Markland said the driver will not be cited for the crash because this was an accident, with no intent on the part of the driver.

Katelynn Robinson works at a dentist's office in the same shopping plaza. She ran to see if she could help after witnessing the crash.

"The car went flying over the speed bump, kind of hit the yellow pole which slowed him down a little bit and then he ran right into the preschool window," Robinson said.

Robinson said a young child in the back of the car hit in his head in the crash.

"The boy was crying hysterically," she said. "Blood coming out of his mouth."

Worried parents are grateful that luck, fate or a higher power was looking out for their children.

"You know the Lord's hand was in that one," said Araya.
