Driver Charged In Downtown Miami Wrong-Way Crash

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A driver was taken into custody after he reportedly hit two teens after he was involved in a wrong-way crash in downtown Miami.

The driver was heading east in the westbound lanes of 11th Street near 1st Avenue when he crashed into a vehicle, according to Miami Fire Rescue. When the driver attempted to flee, he hit two females, ages 18 and 19, who were on the sidewalk near Club Space and several other clubs.

"Several bystanders, including some people that were attending the area night clubs, thought that he was trying to run so, at the time, they sprung into action," said Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll. "The tried to detain the person until the police arrived. Once they arrived, he was taken into custody for questioning."

Police gave the driver a field sobriety test and shortly afterward he was cuffed and put into a patrol car. Police identified the driver as 26-year old Jermaine Gibbens. He's been charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries/property damage.

The two injured females, who suffered serious injuries, were taken to the the Ryder Trauma Center where they were listed as stable.
