Coast Guard Rescues Two People After Vessel Sinks 256 Miles Off Key West

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Coast Guard aircrew rescued two people after their boat capsized and sank 256 miles west of Key West late on Wednesday.

The distress call was received by the Coast Guard 8th District Command Center in New Orleans who relayed the message to the Coast Guard 7th District Command Center in Miami.

The 8th District reported the fishing vessel Hawaii Five-1, and it's two passengers, was listing and machinery aboard the boat had broken loose.

Coast Guard Air Station in Clearwater launched a Jayhawk rescue helicopter and crew along with a Hercules aircraft.

The boat would sink but the two passengers were rescued from a lift raft and lifted into the Jawhawk.

Both survivors were transferred to Key West International Airport where local emergency medical services were waiting.

There were no major medical concerns reported.
