Police Say Target Robbery Was An Inside Job

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Initially considered a victim, an overnight security guard was one of two people arrested after a department store was robbed of thousands of dollars in Southwest Miami-Dade.
It happened Thursday at the Target at 7795 S.W. 40th Street.
According to the arrest report, 22-year-old Carry McCoy confronted a store employee at gunpoint just as the front doors were being locked, around midnight. McCoy allegedly ordered the employee to the floor and entered inside.
McCoy then allegedly approached the store's 23-year-old security guard, Damion Smith, forcing him to open the safe and stuff $25,000 cash into a black garbage bag. Fearing for his life, Smith told Miami-Dade Police he complied and the suspect fled the store.
Detectives were able to apprehend McCoy a short time later in the store's shopping plaza, who confessed to the crime but admitted that he had help when Smith agreed to be an accomplice for a $2,000 cut of the stolen money.
McCoy said Smith's role was to alert him when the store was closing and how many employees were inside.
Both men are now facing several charges including armed robbery.
