MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Ten Miami-Dade County students were honored Tuesday for overcoming adversity and doing the right thing.

"We honor 10 students every month for doing the right thing in our community," said Jodi Atkison with the 'Do The Right Thing' program.

The students were selected out of 700 nominees honored in front of an audience at the Miami Police Academy auditorium.

Twelve-ear old Jaheem Horm from Carol City Middle School is one of the recipients.

Police said Horm jumped in to help a disabled man trapped on the balcony of his burning apartment building.

"I seen the man waiting for help and I ran over there grab the water hose and started spraying him," said Horm.

He says the fire department showed up shortly after and helped him put out the flames.

Horm said he had spotted the fire from a nearby park where he was attending summer camp.

Ten year old Angela Garcia from Citrus Grove and 12-year old Donald Felix of South Miami K-8 both found $100 bills at school and did the right thing of turning the money in.

Another recipient is a student dealing with homelessness yet still managing to "Do The Right Thing."

Not all the winners showed up, but those who did got the chance to be picked up and ride to the ceremony in a police squad car. They also received a pretty cool prize package.

"They get invited to Miami police headquarters. They get recognized by the chief. They get a mini tablet, a plaque, and a bunch of free prizes to Jungle Island, Zoo Miami, Bird Bowl and a free pizza from Papa John's," said Atkison.

The program is meant to recognize youths that help others as well as help bridge the gap between the community and local law enforcement at a time when relations between the two are strained.
