MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade Police are searching for the driver who chased down a teenager on a bicycle, hit the teen and kept on driving.

Miami-Dade Police detectives gathered evidence from the scene near NW 23 Avenue and NW 46 Street on Friday night, including what looked like part of the car – a newer model blue Kia Sportage.

But why was the teen being chased?

Detectives said they are trying to determine that and they have spoken with witnesses on the scene.

Investigators said the teen is at Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.

At first, detectives thought this was a hit and run, but once on scene they realized it was an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

"This was not a hit-and-run situation," said Det. Daniel Ferrin, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department. "It was actually an incident that occurred beforehand. What exactly had happened, they're still trying to determine that right now."

Detectives said there is likely damage to the Kia Sportage on the right front side of the car.

If you have any information that can help investigators contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
