MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A growing number of people are complaining their new iPhones are too hot to hold sometimes. In one extreme case, a  phone went up in smoke.

Just ask Kevin Abuyaghi.

The college student says he was sitting in his car when he hit the "home" button on his iPhone 6 Plus and the device literally went up in smoke.

"It was like an oven. I heard a little pop noise," Abuyaghi said, going on to describe that the searing phone left a burn mark on the nearby passenger seat after he threw it out of his hand.

Apple refused to comment on the situation, though they sent Abuyaghi a replacement phone.

Dan Tynan, editor-in-chief of Yahoo Tech, said Abuyaghi is not the only one complaining their iPhone 6 got too hot to handle.

"There's a lot of chatter online about people not being able to touch their phones," Tynan said. "The processors have just gotten so powerful that the phone can't handle the heat."

There are a few steps consumers can take to reduce the risk of an overheating phone.

Turn off unnecessary apps and disable automatic updates so the phone isn't always working so hard.

Another recommendation is to lower the brightness level of the screen, which also saves battery life.
