Pentagon Scouts Colorado Sites For Guantanamo Prisoners

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - Calling it an informational visit only, a team Pentagon officials is in Colorado to check out potential sites to hold prisoners from the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay.
The military needs an alternative to Guantanamo as part of any plan to close the detention center in Cuba because some prisoners who would remain in custody.
The Pentagon said no alternative sites have been selected at this point.
Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross says the team will evaluate facilities at the Federal Correctional Complex in Florence, Colorado, and the state penitentiary in Canon City.
The survey would take place Tuesday through Thursday. Congress would have to approve moving them to the U.S.
The U.S. holds 114 prisoners at Guantanamo, about half of whom have been cleared for release.
