MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The search is over for a man who went missing after a kayak he and a friend were on sank in Biscayne Bay.

Early Monday morning a search crew in a helicopter spotted his body on the bottom of the bay near an island south of the Broad Causeway.

The two men, both in their 30s, went out in the kayak about 5:30 p.m. Sunday from NE 111th street. Shortly thereafter, the boat began taking on water.  Neither man was wearing a life jacket.

The men clung to the kayak for a while but as night fell, and the water got darker, they panicked and decided to swim toward an island, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

When one of the men made it, he realized his friend was nowhere to be found. When searchers rescued him around 8 p.m. he told them his friend was missing and wasn't sure he knew how to swim.

Crews from the City of Miami, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, FWC and the Coast Guard searched for the missing man by air and by sea through the night.

Authorities have not released the name of the kayakers.
