FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A convenience store clerk was shot to death as he tried to open for business Friday morning in North Lauderdale.

Broward Sheriff detectives have not released the clerk's name but coworkers say he had been on the job about a year.

Gunfire could be heard at 6 a.m. outside the Stop N Go located at 6121 Bailey Road.

When deputies arrived, they found a man who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he died.

Sheriff's investigators said the man was pulling open the security shutters when he was surrounded

"He was ambushed," said Gina Carter with the Broward Sheriff's Office who called it a robbery gone wrong.

The clerk ran for his life and collapsed in the grass. Investigators could be seen gathering his blood stained clothes on Friday morning as the investigation continued.

A few hours later an ice machine from the front of the store was towed away for evidence

The store manager said detectives took surveillance from the store since there are numerous cameras on the premises.

"It's a big loss" said manager Syed Imam.

He is mystified what the robbers were after since there would have been very little cash in the register

"Maybe 50 dollars," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crimestoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
