MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A West Kendall woman was reportedly shot to death by her estranged husband who then tried to take his own life.

Forty-five year old old Alina Lomonte, a mother of two, who had just gotten off work from a flower distribution center in Doral, pulled into the parking lot of her apartment building at SW 75th Street and 152nd Avenue around 4 a.m. and found her husband, Manuel Macias Rodriguez, 56, waiting for her.  The two had recently separated.

"There was a dispute in the parking lot and that's when he was able to produce his firearm and obviously shoot her," said Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.

One of Lomonte's neighbors, Jorge Cruz, said he's a light sleeper and was awakened by the couple's loud argument. He said walked out onto his balcony and watched them argue for a few moments, then went back inside. Cruz said he then heard three gunshots "Bam, Bam, Bam."

When he went back out on the balcony he saw the couple laying on the ground. He then watched as Rodriguez lifted his arm from the pavement with gun in hand, and shot himself in the head. Cruz called 911.

Rodriguez was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center and immediately rushed into surgery.

Coworkers at the Presidente Supermarket where he works security said he isn't known to be a violent person. They knew something was wrong, however, when "Manuel" didn't show up for work Thursday morning.

Cruz said one of the couple's sons said Rodriguez had recently learned his wife had taken a boyfriend.

The couple's two children were in the apartment they share with their mother at the time of the shooting but didn't witness it.

"It's a sad situation because you have two boys that are left behind without mom and for them to find out like this, it's tragic, it's heartbreaking," said Zabaleta.
