NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – A 35-year-old mother is recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital after Miami-Dade police say she was shot twice in a drive-by while sleeping in her home with her two children.

The mother of the victim – Martha Delcid – told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that her daughter was shot twice in the chest near her heart. Delcid's mother says her daughter has undergone surgery and both bullets have been removed.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the cousin of Delcid made a special appeal for the public's help outside Jackson Memorial Hospital where Delcid is recovering.

A tearful cousin, Eva Villatoro, told D'Oench, "On behalf of the whole family I'd like to appeal to anyone in the public who has information to come forward. It would mean a lot to my sisters and to me. She means the world to me."

Villatoo said, "I just feel terrible about what happened. This was terrible. She is a good person, a good family member and a hard worker."

Delcid is part of a tight-knit family from Honduras and her loved ones are at her side at the Ryder Trauma Center where police say she was transported to in critical condition.

One neighbor of the home at 250 N.W. 101st St. said that she heard at least 10 to 12 shots around midnight. She said nothing like this incident has happened there before but she said the home had been broken into several months ago.

Miami-Dade Police say they responded to the home after a 911 call about shots being fired.

They say five people other than Delcid were in the home including her 7-year-old and 9-year-old daughters.

The home was riddled with bullets. Bullet holes mark the front of the home. At least two cars were struck by the bullets and one windshield was shattered.

Police say they do not know if anyone in the home was being targeted or what the motive was or if this was a case of mistaken identity or if this was a random incident.

"It could be anybody," said neighbor Francisco Villegas. "That's my concern. I was hoping it wasn't gunshots. This pretty much sucks. This was unexpected. The fact that I live close by and I heard it. It was unexpected."

Miami-Dade Police say they do not have a description of the gunman or the getaway car. They are looking for at least two suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
