HOMESTEAD (CBSMiami) -- Sad news out of Homestead where a well known figure in the community has died.

The founder of the popular Knaus Berry Farm Ray Knaus has died at the age of 85.

Earlier in the week, a posting on their Facebook page stated, "Ray Edward Knaus, born Dec. 17, 1929 in Miami Dade Co. Fl. peacefully passed away Friday morning Aug. 28, 2015 at his home in Redland, Fl."

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Blue Ridge Old German Baptist Church in Cleveland, Georgia.

Thousands visit the farm every year for their tasty sticky cinnamon rolls, fresh strawberries and natural shakes.

A Miami native, Knaus was born in 1929. At 5-years old, he moved to a two-story home near Knaus Berry Farm's current location in the Redland.

He opened Knaus Berry Farm in 1959 along with his baker wife and brother.

Knaus is survived by his wife, Barbara Shuck-Knaus, two sons, Matthew and wife Diane, Mark and wife Lara; two daughters Rachel and husband Herbert Grafe, Susan and husband Thomas Blocher, and many grandchildren.
