Al Golden on Defense: 'Guys Were Playing to Our Standard'

The Miami Hurricanes ravaged Bethune-Cookman 45-0 in the season opener on Saturday night amid a shortened game due to inclement weather.

Head coach Al Golden applauded the play of the running backs among others.

"We were a little bit shortened timewise but we were still able to get around 200 yards, which is good," Golden said on the Joe Rose Show. "Thats what we need. We need that output from those guys. If one of them separates and warrants 20, 22, 23, 25 carries a game that's fine but this is what we've been doing all camp... I thought they blocked really well."

Allowing just 79 total yards on offense and no points, the Canes' head coach has to be pleased with his team's shutdown defense despite the opponent.

"I don't worry about who were playing," Golden said. "The last time Bethune came up, they rushed for 233 yards and held the ball for 37 minutes. At the end of the day if you don't tackle, if everybody's not playing together... and those are the things that I saw. I saw guys not saying 'it's just Bethune.'

"Guys were playing to our standard and how we practice everyday as opposed to the competition."
