MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Miami-Dade Police and the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice are investigating after a teenage inmate was pronounced dead following a fight at the Juvenile Detention Center in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Police said Elord Revolte, 17, died Monday night.

According to investigators, a fight broke out Sunday afternoon between 15 to 20 inmates at the detention center on Northwest 27th Avenue and Revolte was injured.

Police said medical personnel checked him out immediately, but he wasn't transported to Holtz Children's Hospital until the next day, and he died shortly after.

At the Miami Beach home where Revolte lived for just two days in July, his former step mother declined to be interviewed on camera.

She did, however, say that she was not surprised that he'd gotten in to trouble with the law.

In the home's backyard, Revolte's clothes remain in a black garbage bag. His former guardian said he left the belongings behind when he ran away after a very brief stint in her home.

He was eventually reported missing, then arrested, and now, he's dead.

"I was in shock. I didn't know that happened to him," said Angel Tamayo, a teen who also lives at the home. "He was ambitious. He wanted to make money by himself. He didn't want to depend on people."

Tamayo said he hadn't seen Revolte since he ran away, but knew there was a possibility he'd end up in trouble.

"Doesn't surprise me, but I didn't know what he was capable of or his intentions of what he would do," Tamayo said.

Revolte's former foster mother said she thinks the teen was arrested for armed robbery, though Miami Beach police would not confirm that Tuesday night.

The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice has launched an investigation into the inmate's death.

We requested an interview with a representative from the DJJ, but that request was denied Tuesday night.

In a statement, Secretary Christina Daly said, in part, "It's absolutely heartbreaking to learn of the death of this young man.  In addition to the investigation being conducted by Miami Dade Police, the Department has initiated our own investigation to ensure that our very high standards of accountability and transparency are met and all proper procedures were followed."

That same statement went on to say if rules were not followed, people will be held accountable.

CBS4 was told mental health counselors have been made available to the other juvenile inmates here as the cope with this death.
