BSO: Driver Arrested In Deadly Oakland Park Hit & Run

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -  A man is under arrest in connection to a deadly hit and run that happened in Oakland Park earlier this year.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Scott L. Roman, 47, at his home in Fort Lauderdale on Monday.

Grieving father Don Deverson stood outside Broward County Jail as Roman was booked. Don said the detective called him Monday with the news.

"This is awesome. He called us up, said we made an arrest. It's all for Joe. It's all for Joe," said Don.

Authorities said Deverson was riding his go-ped,  in the 3100 block of Powerline Road around 10:45 p.m. on Monday, May 11th when he was hit by Roman who drove off. Deverson later died at the hospital due to his injuries.

Roman's arrest came after deputies recovered the BMW they said he was driving when he hit Deverson thanks to a tip.

An employee of The Palms condominium on N. Ocean Boulevard, who remembered hearing about the hit and run accident on the news, saw a white BMW 6 Series vehicle return to the Palms with damage to the front, passenger side of the car. He called the sheriff's office.

The BMW that was towed from The Palms two days later, was missing the passenger-side mirror that was left at the scene and had damage to the lower front grill and quarter panel. Deputies said Roman had asked a condo employee to make arrangements to have his vehicle repaired.

Don said he's grateful for the worker's tip and that he's devastated his son will never have the chance to fish anymore.

"Joe loved fishing. Every night that's what he did. The day this happened he was out fishing," said Don.

Sheriff's detectives said it's possible the BMW driver did not see the Go-Ped, which is not considered a legal vehicle to operate on a Florida road.

If the driver had remained on scene, he or she may not have faced any charges in the crash, investigators say.

Roman is now facing charges for failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death and tampering with evidence.

Deverson said BSO did an incredible job putting the case together and the arrest Monday is only the first step in his quest for justice.

"Eye for an eye. Eye for an eye. He deserves to get everything coming to him," said Don.

According to the search warrant in the case, detectives took DNA swabs from inside and outside of the vehicle, presumably to see who was driving. It also says detectives were looking for any evidence of the purchase of alcohol like receipts inside the car.

Investigators say they have surveillance video showing Roman's BMW leaving the upscale Palms Condo in Fort Lauderdale before the crash and returning after the crash with damage to his vehicle. Specifically, detectives say they found car parts at the scene missing from a BMW.

CBS 4 News is also told the surveillance video shows Roman was the only person in the car leaving and entering the condo.

In addition, BSO says "Roman had asked a condo employee to make arrangements to have his vehicle repaired."
