Dade, Broward Schools Monitoring Erika's Progress

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Now that Tropical Storm Erika is not expected to reach hurricane strength before it impacts South Florida, many are wondering what that means for school on Monday.

The current forecast calls for Erika to be over South Florida in the early hours of Monday morning.

At this time Miami-Dade and Broward public schools have not made a decision as to whether they will cancel classes on Monday.

At browardschools.com, the district said their Emergency Management Unit monitors the progress of any major weather system, along with county's Emergency Management Center, and will post updates on their hotline (754) 321-o321, on their Twitter account and on their Facebook page.

In Miami-Dade, the school district's website stated that "district officials are monitoring the progress" of Erika. Updates will be posted on the website, on their Twitter account and on their hurricane hotline (305) 995-3000.

Miami Dade College sent out a statement that College Emergency Planning and Executive Crisis Teams were closely monitoring Tropical Storm Erika and that the college remains open and under normal operations.

For the latest status of operations, MDC students and employees are urged to check the college's website www.mdc.edu, the MDC Hotline (305)237-7500, the news media and the college's social media pages.

At Florida International University, their Emergency Management team is monitor Erika as it moves closer to South Florida.

At this time university operations are proceeding as scheduled, including Saturday classes at all FIU locations. Please look for an announcement on Saturday regarding Sunday and Monday operations.
