MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A father of nine children was shot and killed overnight in Miami.

The fatal shooting happened around midnight just outside the apartment complex where the man lived at 6863 NW 2nd Avenue.

The man's father Grant Jackson Sr. said he was upstairs when he heard 13 gunshots ring out. When he looked out the window, he saw his son, 36-year old Michael Antoine Jackson, laying on the ground and a person dressed in black running away.

Jackson said his son was not a troublemaker.

"He grew up in this neighborhood, he didn't bother anyone that I knew of, he was a good kid as far as I'm concerned," said Jackson.

He added that he didn't understand why this happened.

"It don't make sense. There's too much violence going on out there in the streets today. Every time you turn around someone is getting killed in drive by shootings and stuff. It just don't make no sense. We need to come together and stop all this foolishness," said Jackson.

Jackson said his son had two sets of twins and they were upstairs when their father was killed. Jackon's girlfriend, Terneice Davis, said she used her body to protect the kids.

"I laid over my babies, the bullets sounded so close, I laid over my babies to make sure they weren't coming in the window at my babies," said Davis.

As crime scene investigators gathered evidence, Jackson's friends and family gathered outside the building, heartbroken and asking why.

"He was a good dad a good man I don't understand why this happened to him," said Davis.

"Whoever did this come forward. He was home, he wasn't out in the street messing around. They come to his house and shoot him like a dog," said Jackson.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
