Deputy Suspended, Accused Of Taking Gun Into Holding Cell

LARGO (CBSMiami/AP) — Officials say they suspended a Tampa Bay area deputy 120 hours because she carried a loaded gun into a maximum security holding cell.

An internal affairs report released Thursday says Pinellas County Deputy Daunika Burge is also being transferred from the Court Squad to the Department of Detention and Corrections.

The report says Burge was calling nearly four dozen inmates for court appointments in April when one inmate told the deputy she still had her gun holstered. The Tampa Tribune reports that Burge left the holding cell, locking it behind her, and put the gun and ammunition in a jail control room. She reportedly stored the loaded gun and two magazines on a shelf in an unlocked cabinet.

The report say Burge retrieved her gun about an hour and a half later.
