OPA-LOCKA (CBSMiami) – A funeral service, open to the public, is taking place on Saturday morning for the late Miami-Dade Police Department Director Robert Parker Sr.

His suicide last week shocked family, friends and colleagues.

He'll be eulogized during a ceremony open to the public at Florida International University Arena at 10:00 a.m. followed by his Interment at Vista Memorial Gardens in Hialeah.

"Director Parker leaves behind an extraordinary legacy filled with love and devotion to family, friends and all who came to know him," Miami-Dade Police Director J.D. Patterson said in a statement.

Parker, who retired in 2009 after a 33-year career that saw him rise through the department's civil service ranks, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 22. He was 62.
