Youth Coach Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Boys Goes Before Judge

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) – A former Cooper City baseball coach is facing additional sexual abuse charges.

Forty-seven year-old David Solomon, already being held in the Broward County jail for allegedly molesting an 11-year-old boy, is accused of fondling another 11-year-old he coached.

Solomon held his head in his hands after a bond court hearing on Wednesday morning, where prosecutors and lead detective spelled out the case against him.

Broward Sheriff's Office Det. Ian Kuechler, the lead detective on the case, told the judge that the incident happened in May.

He said Solomon would invite the child over to his home under the pretext of having a 'playdate' with his son.  Detectives say when the child arrived Solomon's son was not there.

"The defendant would text and email the victim's mother informing her that the defendant's son would be at the residence so he could come over and play. Due to the location of the residences the defendant would drive to the victim's home by himself, pick up the child, and bring him back to his residence," Det. Kuechler said.

According to an arrest report, Solomon would tell the victim they were playing a game and he warned the child not to tell anyone.

The judge ordered Solomon held without bond on the new charges. She said Solomon's attempts "seem calculated." He already had no bond after his initial arrest last week.

The other 11-year-old told detectives the abuse happened eight times in Solomon's car and home.

The child said Coach Solomon told him if he talked about what happened it would be a violation of the "bro code."

"He would drive the child home, in that case, he did commit a sexual abuse in the car with the child," said Gina Carter, spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office said at the time of Solomon's arrest. "He had the child sleep over at his home.  In that case he committed a sexual battery."

Investigators say Solomon, a husband and father of two boys, would make a game of it, even giving fun names to specific sex acts.

"He had several kinds of sexual activities he wanted to do with the child and he would actually even call it by a specific name as if this was a game that he was playing," said Carter.

At the time of Solomon's arrest, Cooper City officials posted a statement saying:

  • The City of Cooper and Cooper City Optimist remain committed to safety as the first priority of the youth sports program within the City of Cooper City.
  • The City of Cooper City and Cooper City Optimist have been advised by BSO that a long-time baseball coach in the Optimist's youth athletic program has been arrested.
  • The accused individual passed comprehensive background checks which were conducted by the Optimist Club's background check vendors.
  • The accused individual has been removed as a coach from the Optimist's roster of volunteers.
  • This incident involving allegations against an individual, who served as a volunteer coach, should not in any way reflect on the outstanding work of the many parents and volunteers who serve in the youth sports program.
  • Pending the BSO investigation and prosecution of the matter, any further information requests on the matter should be directed to BSO.

Solomon does have a record, of sorts. He was accused of three counts of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child in Miami-Dade in 2000 but each of those charges was dropped.

Detective Kuechler told the judge that at least four men from Miami-Dade County have contacted authorities saying they would like to provide statements against Solomon.

Solomon tried to have his record expunged in 2011, but that was denied.

The Optimist Club rules specifically say if the charges are dropped the person is eligible to coach.

Prosecutors are urging any other potential victims to come forward and contact BSO.

Because of the allegations, Cooper City is holding a town meeting Thursday night at Cooper City High School.
