Group Pushing To Open Florida's Primaries

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A Miami lawyer is leading the charge to open Florida's primaries.

Gene Stearns, a member of a bi-partisan activist group, said the change is needed because data suggests more and more voters in the state are choosing no party affiliation, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

The group is hoping to gather enough signatures to get the All Voters Vote amendment on the 2016 ballot.

Currently, Florida has a closed primary system. If the amendment were to pass, all registered voters would be able to vote in races for any congressional or state officer regardless of party affiliation.

If the measure makes it onto the ballot, and gets 60 percent voter approval, it would take effect in the 2018 election cycle.
