Man Sentenced In Brutal 1980s Murder Of Pregnant Woman

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A Florida judge handed down a 30-year sentence to a man convicted for the brutal murder of a pregnant woman in the 1980s.
Gary Troutman, now 54-years old, was arrested 20 years later, after DNA was taken while we has in prison for the murder of another woman.
Relatives of Angela Savage, who was 24-years old and pregnant when Troutman killed her, testified in court on Thursday.
One of the relatives said he hopes Troutman dies in prison. The relative went on to say, "I forgive him but he doesn't deserve to breathe the air everyone else is breathing."
"He's the devil. He doesn't deserve to live among decent human beings," said another one of Savage's family members.
As he Troutman left court,Savage s brother shouted, "Gary, I hope you serve your time."
Savage, from Deerfield Beach, and her six month-old son Dween Mitchell Jr were reported missing on March 17, 1986.
Police said her boyfriend at the time, 28-year-old Dween Mitchell called police that same evening when he came home from work and couldn't find them.
Early the next morning, a passerby found Savage's body on the road near the 400 block of SE 1st Way.
Investigators said she had been gagged, bound, beaten and raped.
Just weeks before, another pregnant Deerfield Beach woman had also been found murdered.
Luscious Troutman found 17-year old Cassandra Scott behind his auto repair shop. Her murder went unsolved until June 1994 when police arrested Gary Troutman after he tried to kill his wife.
That's when, officers said, he confessed to the Scott murder, fearing his wife would turn him in.
Troutman plead guilty in 1996 to Scott's murder. During his stint in prison his DNA was tested but less than 10 years later, he was free again. He recieved early release in 2005 from the Everglades Correctional Institute.
About a year later, he battered and threatened his girlfriend, landing him back in jail but not for long. He was released back in 2007. However, that same year, investigators linked his DNA to Savage's murder.
Less than a month later, a Broward Sheriff's Deputy arrested Troutman for Savage's murder after spotting him sleeping in Washington Park.
Since then, Troutman has so far served eight years in prison. He could be out by the time he's 70-years old.
Prosecutors said they agreed to the deal because a recent state Supreme Court ruling that overturned a conviction on DNA evidence put hopes for a stiffer sentence in jeopardy.
