Miami Fire Rescues Puppy From Storm Drain

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A puppy stuck in a storm drain, thanks to Miami Fire Rescue, now has a second chance at life.

A couple driving down the street at NW 2 Court and 77 Street heard the puppy's cries, neighbors said.

"They could hear the yelping of a puppy, but they didn't know exactly where it was coming from.  But they stopped, walked over to the storm drain and saw this little puppy down below," said Captain Ignatius Carroll with Miami Fire Rescue.

The black puppy was trying to climb out.

Just after 11 p.m., fire rescue arrived  to attempt to save the puppy.

Beth Shuler lives up the street and heard all the commotion outside.

"We saw the fire and rescue down here, so we walked down to the end of the block, and all you heard was its cry.  So, we came over to see how we could help and what we could do," said Shuler.

Shuler, who has rescued animals in her neighborhood before, volunteered to care for the little female pup and gave her a warm bath and some food.

While it is unclear how the puppy fell in the drain or how long it was down there, she's happy the little girl is safe and well.

Shuler has temporarily named the pup Drain but authorities still don't know who the puppy belongs to.

In the meantime, Shuler said she'll continue to care for the little one, but isn't able to give her a permanent home.
