WYNWOOD (CBSMiami) -- Police continue to piece together a shooting outside a Wynwood club that has left nearby residents terrified.

Miami police and fire rescue showed up to NW 26th St. between North Miami Ave. and 2nd Ave. early Saturday.

Authorities said an armed man approached a boyfriend and girlfriend who were walking back to their car from the club.

Words were reportedly exchanged between the two men and the gunman shot the boyfriend, killing him.

"It's sad that this man was just walking to his car and has lost his life and all witnessed by his girlfriend," said Miami Police Officer Kenia Fallat.

Wynwood has undergone a lot of changes in recent years, known now for being hip and artsy.

But neighbors who heard and saw what happened wouldn't go on camera out of fear of retaliation.

And despite Wynwood's hip new status, some bar hoppers believe the neighborhood can be tricky and unsafe.

"I come sometimes to downtown and I park my car in a safe place.  But it's the first time I see what happened over here about that and it's terrible," said Jose Bantula who frequents the Wynwood area.

Veronica Sanchez added, "That's very true you know. You have to be cautious. You have to be you know, you have to know what's around yourself. So you have to definitely be cautious."

Police got a vague description of the shooter, who they said fled fled by jumping into the passenger side of an awaiting gray 2013-2015 2-door Hyndai Velostor.

Police said the motive remains unclear.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers (305) 471-8477 or Miami Police Department's Homicide Unit at (305) 603-6350.
