In 24-Hour Span 3 People Severely Injure Hands In Fireworks Accidents

BROWARD (CBSMiami) – In a 24-hour span three locals severely injured their hands in firework-related accidents – including one high-profile NFL player.
The first gruesome accident happened in Dania Beach where a 24-year old lost most of his hand while lighting fireworks outside this home.
"Fireworks had apparently blown off most of his left hand above the wrist. He was in shock. He was in critical condition," Broward Sheriff's Office Spokesman Mike Jachles.
Broward Fire Rescue rushed another man to the hospital because of fireworks had damaged his hand. It was unknown the extent of the damage, but his hand up to his forearm was bandaged up as he was taken in on a stretcher.
And now up in the air is New York Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul's NFL career.
During July Fourth celebrations in Broward, reports came out that Pierre-Paul severely damaged his hand.
Pierre-Paul posted video on his Facebook Fan Page of him holding his baby while standing next to a U-Haul van he rented full of fireworks.
ESPN sources said the Giants' defensive end won't lose any fingers, but Pierre-Paul did severely burn his palm and several fingers. He will visit with team doctors to test his fingers for possible nerve damage.
With hands burned, or worse in three separate firework accidents, rescue officials stress these are totally preventable.
"The bottom line is safe and sane fireworks do not exist. When things go wrong with fireworks, they go very wrong, very fast. Faster than any 911 system can respond," said Jachles.
