Only In The Keys, Pirate Thrown In Pen For Firing Pistols

KEY WEST (CBSMiami) - No this is not a repeat from the 1820s. A disorderly pirate was jailed for disorderly conduct in Marathon.

Monday evening the county's constable, better known as the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, received word that a pirate was shooting his pistols on the old Seven Mile Bridge.

When a Deputy Garrett Braff arrived just before 8:30 p.m. he found 58-year old Jamie Spering decked out as a pirate complete with operational black powder pistols in holsters on each hip, a sword and two knives.

Spering, who said he is an entertainer, told Braff he was on the bridge with friends for sunset. He admitted to shooting both of the pistols but added there was no projectile loaded, just the powder.

He added that he shot the guns safely toward the water. Witnesses, however, contradicted his story. They said he he fired one shot toward the water and one toward cars traveling on the bridge.

Spering was taken into custody, charged with disorderly conduct and booked into jail.
