Kelly: Dolphins Issue With Evan Mathis is 'Cap Flexibility'

Interviews-wqam

A Pro Bowl-caliber offensive guard is out there for the signing in Evan Mathis but the question is what kind of dough it's going to take to land him.

"[The Dolphins] have an interest in Evan Mathis," the Sun Sentinel's Omar Kelly said on the Joe Rose Show. "The problem is that they don't have an interest in paying Evan Mathis what he feels like he's worth and truthfully speaking if Evan Mathis was on the free agent market back in March he probably would've landed something like a $25 million contract. He is a guard that is probably worth five to $6 million a season, no question about it. I've looked at his film. He is an elite guard. He is an elite run blocker. The Dolphins probably haven't had a run blocking guard like that since Justin Smiley.

"The issue is the Dolphins don't want to necessarily pay or use up the $9.5 million in cap space that they have because they're gonna have to carry that over to next year to have some sort of cap flexibility and relief because they've spent a ridiculous amount of money this year."
