MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Daniel Skye, a 14-year old singer/song writer from Ft. Lauderdale, never thought about singing until about two years ago.

One day after water some young kids singing on YouTube, Skye said he decided to give it a try.

"I opened an Instagram page and just started uploading 15 second covers without being good at singing and I started getting followers on Instagram. I just hit 600-thousand followers last night," said Daniel.

And that number keeps growing - sound familiar?

Yes, years ago, at the same age Daniel is now, a young singer from Canada named Justin Bieber found his way to fame in much the same way. For Daniel, it's Bruno Mars who is his inspiration.

"I like all his songs, he's so talented, that's someone I aspire to be like," he told CBS4's Lisa Petrillo.

When asked if he was a fan of Bieber, Daniel said definitely.

"Yes, I like his old music a lot. I would say I like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran too. It's a mix of all those," said Daniel.

He recently returned home from two straight months on the road, playing music venues from Canada to the U.S.

"We played 19 different cities which is crazy. We started in Vancouver and came all the way down. I finished in Fort Lauderdale ten minutes away from my house," said Daniel.

"Lovesick Day" is Daniel's second song on iTunes. His latest single "All I Want " went to #12 on the iTunes pop charts. Just this past weekend Daniel hit the New York stage with singer Demi Lovato.

With fame fast approaching, the 14-year star on the rise promises to keep his eyes on the stars but his feet on the ground.

"I've known from the beginning that you must stay modest and keep yourself grounded and I've seen bad things so I always have it in my head stay grounded and I'm not going to get off the path. I pinky promise," he told Petrillo.
