Police Chase Stems From Fort Pierce Murder Case

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The man police say led  them on high speed chase on Wednesday smirked at CBS4 cameras while being booked into jail.

Police said the man was behind the wheel of a Toyota Scion that speed past cars in the break down lane on I-95 at the beginning of evening rush hour.

Moments later, he slid across four lanes of traffic to the right shoulder.  He was exiting at Atlantic with police in tow, not worried about staying on the road. He then went onto the grass to get away from cars.

At some point, police said a woman who was in the car bailed out.

CBS4's Ted Scouten asked the driver, "Who was the girl who bailed out?"

The man just smiled, not saying who she was.

As the chase continued, the white car barely missed other drivers, going the wrong way down streets and blowing through intersections. It all came to an end on NW 6th Street near 27th Avenue

"I just, the police were flying from that way, to this way and took off that way," said witness Lisa Hollis.

The door flew open as the car was seen coasting to a stop and a Broward Sheriff's Deputy rammed it, keeping the driver inside.

With guns drawn, the driver stayed put until a deputy pulled him out from the passenger's side door, getting him on the ground.

The whole thing stemmed from a Fort Pierce murder case.  Police were after the car. They want to see if there may be evidence inside.

Shrugging off questions, the man taken into custody wasn't telling if there was any evidence in the car.  Instead, he stood pretty calmly looking at the camera.

He's now facing charges for a high speed chase, one that took police half way across the county, putting countless others on the road and in neighborhoods in danger.
